Crimes lead to the formation of Grudges - Grudges wreak havoc on society - therefore Grudges need to be assessed in an organized manner.

To this end, an institution called the Clementbox was created: a technologically advanced holding cell for the interrogation of citizens guilty of committing a crime that had led to the creation of a Grudge.

To develop the citizens' sense of justice and righteousness, the Clementbox trials were made public for viewing and judgement. It has become a mass public jury trial where the jury is the citizenry.

Is Clementbox society a surveillance state?

Not necessarily! A past iteration of the government established laws somewhat protecting peoples' rights to privacy, so surveillance is not constant.

There is some surveillance in public areas and government buildings - for example, the city center and Clementbox and Public Service buildings.

Surveillance is more concentrated in the center of the city, then varies by district.
